The historic estate in Akron, Ohio, transforms into a winter wonderland for its annual Deck the Hall celebration.
As the holiday season approaches, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, Ohio, is getting ready to dazzle visitors with its annual Deck the Hall celebration. This historic estate, once home to the Seiberling family, founders of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, is known for its grand holiday decorations and festive atmosphere. This year, the staff, volunteers, and local designers have taken a unique approach, foregoing a central theme and allowing their creativity to shine in each room. From a Santa made of 40,000 Lego pieces to a mermaid-themed room, guests can expect a delightful and eclectic experience.
A Polar Bear Gets a Festive Makeover
In preparation for the holiday tours, the staff at Stan Hywet decided to give their beloved polar bear rug, affectionately named Paulie, a festive makeover. Chloe Wingard, the curatorial projects specialist, and her assistant, Katrina Neff, rummaged through the Trunk Room on the third floor, filled with bins of holiday decorations, until they found the perfect accessory: a Santa hat. With the hat in place, Paulie is now ready to greet visitors during the special holiday nighttime tours.
Decking the Halls with Creativity
Unlike previous years, the 2021 Deck the Hall celebration at Stan Hywet does not have a central theme. This departure from tradition has allowed the staff, volunteers, and local designers to let their imaginations run wild. Each room in the manor house has been transformed into a unique and enchanting space. Visitors can expect to see everything from a room inspired by the Cold Miser and Heat Miser from the classic Christmas TV special “The Year Without A Santa Claus” to a Santa made entirely of Lego bricks.
Collaborations and Creativity
The preparation for Deck the Hall involves months of planning and hundreds of hours of work. This year, Stan Hywet has partnered with local businesses and organizations to bring their creative visions to life. LEAF Home and Garden, Jill Pangas Designs, Jones Group Interiors, Kern’s Home and Garden, the Akron Makerspace, and NEOLUG (the Northeast Ohio LEGO user group) have all contributed to the decorations, ensuring a diverse and captivating experience for visitors.
