Kaitlin Gallagher: A Journey from Marine Biology to Teaching and Research

Dr. Kaitlin Gallagher’s passion for marine biology and teaching leads her to become a marine and vertebrate zoologist at Florida Southern College.

From a young age, Kaitlin Gallagher had a deep fascination with the ocean and its creatures. Inspired by her father’s scuba diving adventures, she embarked on a journey that would lead her to become a marine biologist and professor. Her love for marine life, coupled with her enthusiasm for teaching, has shaped her career and brought her to her current position as a marine and vertebrate zoologist at Florida Southern College (FSC).

The Early Years: A Passion for Marine Biology
As a child, Gallagher idolized her father’s scuba diving expeditions in South Florida. She longed to explore the underwater world alongside him and developed a strong interest in marine biology. At the age of 12, she obtained her scuba diving license and joined a diving club with her father, solidifying her passion for the field.

Undergraduate Studies and Unexpected Discoveries
Gallagher pursued her undergraduate degree in marine biology at the Honors College at Florida Atlantic University. During an internship at the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University, she unexpectedly found herself studying fish parasites, a field known as parasitology. Fascinated by this new area of research, Gallagher continued her studies on parasites throughout her junior and senior years.

Graduate Studies and a Love for Teaching
After completing her undergraduate degree, Gallagher attended the University of Connecticut, where she earned her Ph.D. in marine biology. During her time there, she studied the evolution of shark tapeworms and discovered her passion for teaching while working as an assistant teacher. This experience ignited her desire to become a professor and combine teaching with her research.

Postdoctoral Work and the Impact of COVID-19
Following her Ph.D., Gallagher took on a postdoctoral position at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre in Vancouver. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to shift her work to a remote setting. This led her to move back to Florida and eventually to Memphis, where she taught biology at Christian Brothers University for three years.

A Return to Florida and a Focus on Teaching and Research
Seeking a smaller college environment where she could engage with students and pursue her research interests, Gallagher joined Florida Southern College as a marine and vertebrate zoologist. In addition to her role as a professor, she has initiated various research projects and aims to involve her students in these endeavors. Gallagher values the freedom to explore her passions and support her students in doing the same.

Conclusion:

Dr. Kaitlin Gallagher’s journey from a young scuba diving enthusiast to a marine and vertebrate zoologist at Florida Southern College exemplifies the power of passion and dedication. Her love for marine biology, combined with her enthusiasm for teaching, has shaped her career and allowed her to make a meaningful impact on her students’ lives. Through her research and teaching, Gallagher continues to inspire future generations of marine biologists and foster a love for the ocean and its creatures.
